Some weddings involve a long drive and an early alarm. Laura and Daniel's did not. Hanbury Wedding Barns is one of the closest venues to me, and getting to film there is always a treat, less time in the car, more time soaking up a venue I know and love.
A Couple Who Already Knew Their Vision
What made this enquiry stand out from the start was that Laura and Daniel had already found the film they wanted theirs to feel like: a previous wedding I filmed at Foxtail Barns. That film leaned heavily on slow motion, letting small, beautiful moments breathe rather than rushing past them, and wove in nature as a recurring visual thread, bees drifting through golden light, movement and stillness sitting side by side.
It's not the first time I've built a film around a natural motif. A previous couple's film at West Mill in Derby quietly featured a pair of swans throughout, a small, subtle touch that gave the whole piece a sense of continuity and calm.
When a couple references a specific film and can articulate why it resonated with them, it makes my job easier and more exciting in equal measure. I know exactly the tone, pacing, and visual language they're after before I've even picked up a camera. For Laura and Daniel, that meant leaning further into slow motion and nature-led shots, tailored to their own day at Hanbury.
Speeches That Stopped the Room
Vision and style aside, the real highlight of this film came from the speeches. Laura and Daniel's wedding party delivered genuinely emotive words, the kind where you can hear a voice catch mid-sentence, that small crack in tone that no amount of planning can manufacture. Moments like that are pure gold for a wedding film. They're the ones that make people well up watching it back years later, and they're always the moments I hope for on the day.
Hanbury Wedding Barns: An Indoor Ceremony, For Once
I've been fortunate enough to film at Hanbury several times now, but this was the first time I'd covered an indoor ceremony there, and it didn't disappoint. The venue offers so much variety: the surrounding fields make for beautiful, relaxed couple portraits, and the breakfast room is spacious and full of character for the wedding breakfast itself.
Small but very welcome detail on a warm summer's day: air conditioning. A genuine luxury when you're carrying kit around a venue all day.
